Hi nice idea
I tried a different method to get around 8gb (wich is the max you can get from referrals unless you use edu trick)
then I used mailinator emails to create referrals emails invitation
then using virtual pc with windows xp I install dropbox each time for each email created
and I used program to change mac address of network card (mac address changer)
And it worked like charm

Hi moopet. I agree we're stuck until something new is adopted by one of the big media players. The other problem with tags is that they wouldn't necessarily be in the ID3 tag - they would most likely just be in that particular media player's database, which means it isn't transportable. It would be possible as a text string in ID3, but I just can't see iTunes or MediaMonkey doing that. We can only hope, eh?

I've been grinding my teeth over the genre problem for years, and think the only way forward is to ditch them altogether and go for tags, as suggested above.
Automatically populating tags would have to have some controls set (for example only using a set of tags you have approved) but where genres fall down for me is not in the song/artist/album granularity but in the fact that any single track might fit several genres. Tag one track Female Vocal + Electronic and another Female Vocal + Acoustic and you can see how easy it would be to find yourself in a contemplative mood and generate a playlist of

Female Vocal
+ Not (Electronic)

Only problem is, unless someone big like itunes really pushes tags, we're stuck in genre hell.

Thanks for this text ... hm, it seems, that you did much research on this subject ... i googled to this page, cause I was looking for a basic automatic genre-tagging, too.

For me it would be nice, to have a basic automatic genre-tagging. 25 genres ist really enough, but I should be automatic.
Easiest way for an automatic tool would be: identify artist -> automaticall add genre.
basic genre-tagging by artist isnt 100% correct for every artist and song, but in generell, its a good base. And, when using only a 25-genre-base, has a "genre-by-artist"-method good accuracy.

If anyone knows a way to do this, please let me know :)

I used to just use a simple notes or text type todo list, which worked really well for a while. I eventually wanted to start being able to categorise them and tag them according to certain groups (home, work, house) and tag them according to where I was (phone, computer, home, out and about, etc) which meant adopting an application. My real gripe is getting todo notes showing up on my calendar, as you can tell by my post. This would really help me, personally, but not necessarily something everyone is bothered with.
I like the geekiness of the iPhone app and Toodledo all as well - it appeals to my inner-nerd.

Good post, though i'm a Blackberry person (work junk) and know relatively nothing about iPhones. I do use the Outlook Gmail sync. I actually created a 'private' webpage on my site that I sent out to my family thats got my google calender on it for them, mainly because i'm on the road quite a bit & figured they may need to know where i'm at.

As for todo & notes, I used to go looking for apps and stuff for it, but in the end, i just created a single outlook "note" that i just open up, type in my junk & set it to remind me later on. it's pretty low-brow, but it's simple. i actually do the same thing at work w/ a single Notepad++ document on my quick launch bar. real secure huh?

New bloggers might also try out the new hosted service from squarespace ordinarily I would not recommend going the actively hosted route but these guys really seem to know that they are doing and they don't hold your data hostage. You can export it to wordpress whenever you want.

Thanks for posting this! I'm in the same boat and have resigned to waiting until someone else solves this for all of us. So frustrating! I do like the Allmusic categories/moods/etc. and also the excel pdf of music genres, but don't want to waste days/weeks of my life organizing tags manually! Cheers!

Actually, a program called iTSfv (http://itsfv.sourceforge.net/) does this quite well using Last.FM. I've got my 1000ish tracks tagged with genre, and most of them seem to be alright. I think it does use only general album genres though, as all my Led Zeppelin songs are tagged as either "Classic Rock" or plain "Rock". Better than nothing.

Although you do get some wacko ones - Dokken and Lee Aaron were "80s", and "Devil's Right Hand" by Steve Earle was "Body Parts".

I wonder how the iTunes Genius function works and what sort of database they use. That could be a good starting point as it works pretty well for me. I think Apple will keep it all under covers, though since it gets people to use iTunes.
